TL;DR NMN capsules don’t need to be refrigerated if you store them as the label says: below 25°C, in a dry cupboard, out of direct sunlight, with the lid closed. NMN breaks down faster in heat, humidity and bright light, and its main breakdown product is nicotinamide, a common form of vitamin B3. Refrigeration matters more for powder, which is exposed to air every time you open it, and Youth & Earth recommends keeping its sublingual NMN powder in the fridge. Additionally, Youth & Earth only use Effepharm’s UTHEVER® NMN, a stabilised form that is less sensitive to heat and moisture than ordinary NMN. |
A new bottle of NMN usually arrives with a short instruction on the label: store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Because NMN is often described as a sensitive compound, it’s fair to wonder whether the kitchen cupboard is really good enough, or whether it belongs in the fridge next to the milk.
Does NMN need to be refrigerated?
No, NMN capsules don’t need to be refrigerated for normal daily use. Kept in a sealed bottle below 25°C, away from damp and direct sunlight, a well-made capsule should hold its labelled potency to its best-before date.
Powder is different: an open tub meets fresh air and moisture every time you scoop a dose, so it's best n kept cold and dry.
Why NMN breaks down: heat, moisture and light
Does NMN go off? Not in the way food does. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), the precursor your cells use to make NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), doesn’t turn harmful as it ages.[1] It gradually loses activity, breaking down into nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3 found in food and multivitamins, and ribose-5-phosphate.
Three conditions speed that process up:
-
Heat: warmth speeds up the reaction that splits NMN into nicotinamide, and the longer the exposure, the faster potency falls.[1]
-
Moisture: NMN is hygroscopic, meaning it draws water from the air. That water drives hydrolysis, the reaction that breaks the molecule apart.
-
Light: prolonged direct sunlight can add to the breakdown, so an opaque container beats a bright windowsill.
None of this happens overnight, so storage matters most across the months a bottle is in use.
How to store NMN capsules
Capsules are more forgiving than powder because each dose stays sealed until you take it. The capsule itself isn’t airtight, though: the closed lid, the desiccant sachet and an opaque bottle do the protecting, so how you handle the bottle matters most.
Use this checklist as a quick reference:
|
Do |
Avoid |
Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Keep the bottle in a cupboard or drawer below 25°C |
Windowsills, radiators, or shelves above the oven or kettle |
Heat is the main driver of breakdown |
|
Close the lid straight after each dose |
Leaving the cap loose |
Open bottles let humid air reach the capsules |
|
Leave the desiccant sachet inside |
Throwing the sachet away |
It absorbs moisture that gets in when you open the lid |
|
Keep capsules in the original opaque bottle |
Clear pill organisers for weeks at a time |
The original bottle blocks light and seals better |
|
Store in a bedroom or kitchen cupboard |
Bathroom cabinets |
Baths and showers cause repeated spikes in humidity |
|
Take the bottle indoors with you |
Leaving it in a parked car |
A car in the sun gets far hotter than your home |
Does refrigeration help?
Refrigeration can help, but it isn’t necessary for capsules kept below 25°C. Chemical reactions slow as temperature drops (the relationship described by the Arrhenius equation), so colder storage does slow NMN breakdown.[2]
The condensation problem
Open a cold bottle in a warm kitchen and moisture from the air settles inside it and on the capsules, which is exactly what you were trying to avoid.
Here is how the answer changes by situation:
|
Scenario |
Fridge needed? |
Why |
|---|---|---|
|
NMN capsules in daily use |
No |
A sealed bottle below 25°C protects them; daily fridge trips add condensation risk |
|
Unopened spare capsule bottles |
Optional |
Slows breakdown further; warm to room temperature before opening |
|
Youth & Earth sublingual NMN powder |
Yes, as advised |
An open tub meets air and moisture at every dose, so Youth & Earth recommends the fridge |
|
Heatwave, or rooms regularly above 25°C |
Worth considering |
If you can’t stay below the label temperature, the fridge is safer |
|
Travelling |
No |
Keep it sealed, in hand luggage, and out of hot cars and direct sun |

How to know your NMN still has full potency
A label claim only means something if it holds on the day you take the capsule, not just the day it was made. A 250mg capsule should still deliver 250mg at its best-before date, and stability testing is how manufacturers check that.
Stability testing usually follows ICH Q1A(R2), the international guideline for stability testing of medicines.[3] Supplements aren’t legally bound by it, but it is the industry’s reference point for two kinds of test:
-
Real-time (long-term) testing: samples are stored at 25°C and 60% relative humidity and tested across the shelf life to show how the product actually ages.
-
Accelerated testing: samples are held at 40°C and 75% relative humidity for six months to expose weaknesses early.
Most NMN capsules carry a best-before date 18 to 24 months from manufacture. Our NMN Certificate of Analysis guide explains how to check what a brand’s test results actually cover.
How Youth & Earth approaches NMN stability
Youth & Earth’s NMN capsules don’t need refrigeration because stability is addressed at three points:
-
The ingredient: Youth & Earth uses UTHEVER®, a clinically researched NMN raw material made by Effepharm. Effepharm developed it to absorb less moisture than standard NMN and reports raw-material testing at 40°C and 75% relative humidity.
-
The testing: Youth & Earth’s NMN is tested for identity, potency, purity, heavy metals and microbial contamination, so the NMN content can be checked against the label.
-
The packaging: the 250mg capsules come in a dark green, light-blocking bottle with a desiccant sachet, giving the protection a capsule shell can’t provide alone.
The raw-material data shows the ingredient holds up under demanding conditions; the label instruction, below 25°C in a cool, dry place, keeps the finished capsules in that range at home. For a wider view, see our best NMN supplements in the UK guide, our NMN dosing guide or our NMN and NAD+ guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to refrigerate NMN capsules?
No. Capsules kept below 25°C in a sealed bottle, away from damp and sunlight, don’t need refrigeration. Youth & Earth’s sublingual powder is the exception and should be kept in the fridge.
Does NMN lose potency over time?
Yes, slowly. Heat, moisture and light gradually break NMN down into nicotinamide, so correct storage and stability testing are what keep potency close to the label claim.[4]
Can I store NMN in the bathroom?
It’s best not to. Baths and showers cause repeated humidity spikes, and moisture is a main driver of NMN breakdown.
What happens if NMN gets too hot?
Breakdown speeds up. Overheated NMN isn’t harmful, since the main product is nicotinamide, but it may deliver less NMN per dose; repeated exposure, such as a hot car, is what to avoid.
How long does NMN last once opened?
An opened bottle should stay within specification until its best-before date, typically 18 to 24 months from manufacture, if the lid is closed after each dose, the desiccant stays in and it is kept below 25°C.
